1001 Women in the Twentieth Century

This winter, the Amsterdam Museum is staging 1001 Women in the Twentieth Century. This exhibition, created in association with Els Kloek, author of the book of the same name, presents remarkable women who played a key role in Dutch history in the last century. Some are famous or were notorious, others almost unknown.

Beatrix de Rijk – The first Dutch woman to hold a pilot’s licence, obtained in France in 1911.

Visitors will meet more than 120 women through a variety of objects, photographs and documents, and discover what made them so special. They fought for their rights, they conquered the public domain, they served in the resistance, they excelled in forms of art, they wanted to change the world. Women and men Of the Present day give their own views of the stories of the women who feature in the exhibition. Visitors can add the name of a woman they consider important to the exhibition.
